A necklace can be the ultimate touch to enhance any look. Any day is a great day to wear a necklace, but specific events such as graduations, anniversaries, parties, weddings or dates are special occasions to find the perfect necklace for you. However, choosing the right necklace is not always an easy task.
Necklaces: some ideas about the length
Depending on the length, there are four main types of necklaces. chokers are the shortest and they are worn tightly around the neck. Very popular in the 90s, chokers have made a comeback in the last few years. The best thing about them? They can be worn with almost anything.
The next length is the most common one and it’s called princess. Lying slightly below the neck and resting below the collarbone, this necklace length is perfect for everyday wear and any event, from casual dinners to the most elegant ones.
The matineé necklace rests at the bust line, perfect to wear with cocktail dresses.
Finally, the longest necklace types are the opera-length necklaces (typically between 28 and 37 inches long) and can both be worn long as a large single-strand or short, as a two-strand choker style necklace.

How to wear a necklace correctly?
In addition to length, different factors can affect the final look of a necklace, but here we will focus on two main factors: the shape of the face and the neckline of the garment. As we saw in our previous guide, it's important to analyze your face shape when choosing jewelry. Take a close look at the shape and width of your face (and neck) and go from there.
Oval faces are more versatile, as most necklaces are the right length for them. If you have a round face, a longer necklace will visually elongate it, but if it's square or heart-shaped, stick to shorter lengths to smooth out your angles.
The neckline you wear is very important as it will determine if your necklace is the focal point of your outfit. For example, with a turtleneck pullover, your neck will not be exposed, so you may choose not to wear a necklace, or if you do, you should choose a long (or opera length) necklace or bulky chain. However, with strapless or strapless tops, your shoulders will be completely exposed, leaving you a little wild. Choose a very eye-catching necklace, or keep it simple with a short necklace or necklace with stones.
For V-neck tops and neckline necklines, it's best to choose a necklace that matches the V shape, such as a single pendant necklace, but it's best to avoid chokers as they may make your neck look thicker. Choose a necklace with a pendant so that you can balance out the neckline, but be careful that the necklace is not too long as it looks less elegant.
It may take some trial and error, but if you follow our guidelines and do some experimentation (always keeping your personal style and occasion in mind), you'll find the type of necklace that works best for you.
